University of the Arts London

Fashion Design and Merchandising students can study abroad for a summer at University of the Arts London, ranked 2nd in the world for Art and Design. UAL specializes in arts, design, fashion, and the performing arts. Classes for fashion are offered through its Central Saint Martins campus and the London College of Fashion.

 

Pre-Approval Process Fashion students must first apply for pre-approval from the School of Fashion before completing the Office of Global Education application for UAL.

Important Dates & Billing

Application Deadline: February 15, 2027

Program Dates: Program dates vary each year based upon the academic calendar set by the University of the Arts London. The following are general guidelines:

  • Summer 3-Week Programs: Students should choose 1 course.
    • Session 1: (Late June - Mid July)
      • Experimental Fashion Knitwear
      • Fashion Business
      • Fashion Design
      • Fashion Styling
      • Textile Design
      • Fashion Communication
    • Session 2: (Mid July - Early August)
      • Advanced Fashion Design 
      • Fashion Business
      • Fashion Design
      • Fashion Communication
    • Note: the Advanced Fashion Design and Fashion Design programs are very similar. It is not recommended to do both Advanced Fashion Design and the Fashion Design programs.
  • Summer 6-Week Programs: Students should choose 2 courses.
    • You may take a Session 1 and a Session 2 course to create a 6 week program, Late June - Early August.
  • Summer 8-Week Programs: Students should choose 1 course.
    • Introduction to Fashion Business (Early June - Late July)
    • Introduction to Fashion Design (Early June - Late July)

Withdrawal and Commitment Deadlines: Students should refer to the host university's withdrawal and commitment deadlines.

Final Payment Deadline:  The program fees will be billed to your Ƶ State student account. The program fee deadline aligns with the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center's summer due dates. You should refer to the first Summer 2027 due date.

Application Process

Students will be required to complete two applications:

  • an internal Ƶ State Education Abroad application,
  • and a partner university application.

These quick steps will help walk you through the process.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

When you click the "Apply Now" button (located towards the top and bottom of this page), you will be brought to the Education Abroad application system where you can view program costs and start an application. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline!

2. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by an Education Abroad Advisor. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis. Please note that acceptance to the program by Ƶ does not serve as final approval. The host institution or program provider grants final approval for each applicant.

3. Complete the Host University Application

Once your Education Abroad application has been accepted, you will be nominated to the host university. You will complete the host university’s application and wait for official acceptance to the program. 

Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements

These requirements apply to all UAL courses except for the CSM Advanced Fashion Design course. 

  • Approval by the School of Fashion. Submit a School of Fashion Study Away Application
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program abroad

Eligibility Requirements for the CSM Advanced Fashion Design course

  • Approval by the School of Fashion. Submit a School of Fashion Study Away Application
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Due to the high level of skills needed for this particular class, students must currently be Junior fashion students enrolled in junior studio or who have taken junior studio.
  • To apply, please submit a portfolio and a personal statement for review to Professor Trista Grieder, twamsle1@kent.edu. 
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program abroad

CSM Fashion Portfolio Guidelines:

  • Format: The portfolio should be no more than 20 pages, with written descriptions on each page.
  • Content: 
    • Design Development and Process: Include personal primary research focused on design development. This may involve drawing, collage, on and off the body work, textile/fabric/paper manipulation, and 2D to 3D toile development.
    • Technical Awareness: Display technical skills through technical drawings, sewing, and pattern making, as you will be involved in prototyping and sampling.
    • Fashion Interest and Experimentation: Reflect a keen interest in fashion through research and development. Include images of your work that demonstrate experimentation and connection across pages.

CSM Personal Statement Guidelines:

  • Format: One full page, letter size, portrait orientation.
  • Content: Explain why you want to study fashion at CSM, your interest in the advanced class, what you hope to learn, and how this will affect your future career in fashion.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Ensure your portfolio effectively showcases your skills and interests in fashion design.
  • Save both the portfolio and statement as one PDF (formatted as Last name_First initial_CSM portfolio and statement).
  • Please submit the portfolio and personal statement for review to Professor Trista Grieder, twamsle1@kent.edu.

Transferring Credits

Transfer Credits

With this program, students enroll in courses at a partner (host) institution. You will need to transfer the credits you earn abroad back to Ƶ.

Upon successful completion of the program, the host institution will issue you an official transcript, which will be needed for the credit transfer process.

You must earn passing grades on the courses you take abroad for the credits to transfer. 

Prior to departure, students will meet with their academic advisor to complete a Transfer Course Planning (TCP) Form, which will outline the courses you plan to take while abroad and how the courses will transfer to Ƶ. 

Some courses have already been pre-approved for transfer to Ƶ State and can be viewed on the Transfer Credit Guide. Please note that this is only a guide and is NOT a comprehensive list of courses available at each partner institution.

Credit Approval

Prior to departure, it is your responsibility to meet with your academic advisor to discuss the courses you plan to take while abroad.

If a course needs to be evaluated for transfer, you are responsible for working with your education abroad advisor to obtain the syllabus and have it reviewed by Ƶ State faculty.

The United Kingdom consists of the countries of England, Scotland, Wales (which together make up Great Britain) and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and is part of the European Union.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. Each of the countries within the UK has a distinct culture and a fierce sense of national pride. Although the English pound is the most common currency in circulation, banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland also issue currency in the same denominations, which look similar and mainly circulate within their respective countries. English, Scottish and Northern Irish pound notes are equal in value. Keep in mind that if you plan to travel to the Republic of Ireland, the Euro is their official currency.

As the U.K.’s capital, London is where history meets modernity, with traditions from thousands of years ago to dynamic startups and global firms. As far as sights and activities go, you can spend years living there and still never see it all. On your study abroad program to London, try to pack in as much as you can – museums, galleries, theater, iconic landmarks, street markets, pubs, trendy cafes – your only limitation is hours in the day!

Students can use buses, the London Underground (the Tube) and trains to navigate London. 

Housing

Study abroad students at UAL will be able to request housing at their The Sketch House residence.

Sketch House is a 5 minute walk from Finsbury Park Underground and National Rail station. The station is on both the Piccadilly and Victoria underground lines and offers links to Moorgate, Kings Cross and Cambridge. Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Arts are just a quick tube ride away.

Ensuite rooms and studios are available. Flats are shared between 5-10 students.

  • What types of transportation does this program use? Will I be navigating public transportation? Is public transportation accessible?
  • What is the climate like in my host country? Will there be extreme heat or cold?
  • Are my medications controlled or banned abroad? Are there regulations on traveling with my medications, service animal, etc.?
  • Are there prescriptions that I need to fill before I leave? What medications are available abroad? Is there a refrigerator to store my medication if needed?
  • How does my host country view my disability?
  • How do accessibility regulations in my host country differ from the US? (Ex.) Are ramps, elevators, tactile markings, etc. required/available?
  • Can I use my US medical devices in my host country? Is the voltage different? Will my equipment fit through a standard door (height/width) in my host country?
  • If there are overnight field trips outside of my typical housing for the program, is it possible to maintain the same housing accommodations I may require?

Pre-Departure Orientation

Prior to your study abroad experience, you will participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the College of Honors and Global Education. During this orientation, you will be provided with information including but not limited to:

  • international travel procedures;
  • in-country resources;
  • health and safety resources and information;
  • culture shock and resources to help prepare for living abroad.

All students are encouraged to register with the prior to departure.

In addition, we encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel page for for traveling to your destination(s).

If vaccinations or medications are needed according to the CDC, you should make arrangements for appointments with your healthcare provider or the DeWeese Health Center as soon as possible. Appointment openings at the DeWeese Health Center are limited and vaccines may need to be ordered, which takes time. Please note that not all immunizations are available at the DeWeese Health Center.
